New Yorkers in need will be able to indulge in a free Thanksgiving Day feast, thanks to a network of food pantries and organizations working together to provide for those who can't afford a traditional holiday meal. With rising levels of food insecurity in the city, these groups are stepping up to offer a welcome respite to those struggling.
The Adam Clayton Powell State Office Building in Harlem will serve 600 meals between 9am and noon on Thanksgiving Day, with distribution to several nonprofits that will then pass them along to their own networks. Later that day, City Councilmember Yusef Salaam will host a community feast for pre-registered guests at the same location.
The Bowery Mission has been serving its annual Thanksgiving Day meal since 1879 and this year is no exception. A hot breakfast will be available from 8am to 9am, followed by Thanksgiving meals between 11:30am and 4pm on the sixth floor of their facility at 90 Lafayette Street.
For those with a little farther to travel, the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen in Manhattan will serve about 500 people on Thanksgiving Day itself and again on the Friday after. Their meal includes all the traditional fixings β roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and apple cider.
On Wednesday of Thanksgiving Week, New York Common Pantry is hosting a free lunch from 1:30 to 3:30pm at their East Harlem facility at 8 East 109th Street. The pantry has seen an unprecedented surge in enrollment this week β over 118% more than last year's numbers.
Meanwhile, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards and chef JJ Johnson are teaming up for a major meal giveaway. On Wednesday morning, the three will present over 6,000 meals to nonprofits at Queens Borough Hall. Later that day, they'll host a community feast for pre-registered guests.
